Holy Week at MUMC
Palm Sunday, March 25:
Palm Sunday marks the final Sunday in Lent. During the three morning worship services we will remember Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem with palms and a procession.
Holy Thursday Service, March 29, 7:30 p.m.:
Historically, Holy Thursday, signifies the last evening Jesus spent with his disciples in the Upper Room. Scripture tells us that Jesus shared a meal with disciples, washed their feet, and instituted what we know call “Eucharist” or “Holy Communion.” That same evening, Jesus went to Gethsemane to pray and was betrayed by Judas. In this service, the congregation will remember many of the events that happened during Jesus’ final evening with his disciples.
Good Friday Noon Service:
On Friday, March 30, the congregation is invited to remember Christ’s crucifixion and death on Calvary. There will be opportunities to pray and reflect. The service will take place at Noon in the Sanctuary.
Sanctuary Choir Presents “Behold the Darkness” March 30, 7:30 p.m.:
Churches often offer Tenebrae services on Good Friday. A Services of Tenebrae often called a service of shadows or darkness. During a Tenebrae service, candles are gradually extinguished as scripture is read or a song sung. On Friday evening, March 30 the Sanctuary Choir, soloists, and readers will present “Behold the Darkness” by Benjamin Harlan. Through music and readings the service will commemorate Jesus’ final hours on earth as he suffered death upon the cross.
Celebrate the Resurrection Sunday, April 1
No fooling, Easter Sunday is April 1. On Easter Sunday there will be four opportunities to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. There will be a Sunrise Service held at the Pavilion at 6:45 a.m. We will also hold our regularly scheduled Sunday morning services: 8:30 in the Sanctuary, 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary, and Life on the Road, also at 11 a.m., in the Family Life Center. Every one is invited to bring flowers to adorn a flowering cross which will be at each service.
Families are invited to the EGGstravaganza during the Sunday School Hour (9:45-10:45 am) in the Fellowship Hall. Join us for family minute-to-win-it games, snacks, crafts and a color-coded Easter egg hunt that reveals the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. Families are invited to come and go during the hour, but be sure to present the last 10 minutes as we gather for an Easter story with the releasing of butterflies!
