Camp Firelight (VBS 2024)

This year, our Vacation Bible School theme was “Camp Firelight,” which meant our Campers were heading out to Camp Firelight with their HEAD Counselor Jenny and Lumen the Firefly to earn their badges and learn to trust God, even when they feel afraid.

Our mission project this year is to collect money for PAWS Animal Shelter. The goal was to raise $600, and in total we raised over $900!

Creating Camp Firelight

This year, we had the task of turning Manchaca UMC into Camp Firelight. There were forests, animals (including some familiar faces), caves, lakes, and more!

What We Learned

This year at Camp Firelight, we were joined by a new Head Counselor Jenny, who is, “the best HEAD Camp Counselor you’ve ever seen” (according to her, at least). She and Lumen the Firefly helped lead Campers through a lesson each day to earn their badges. Jenny, Lumen, and the Campers all learned what it means to Trust God to Go With Us, to Lead The Way, to Share Wisdom, and to Give Us Peace.

Four banners. From right to left: a blue banner reading "Trust God to Go With Us" with an image of a little hand inside of a big hand; an orange banner reading "Trust God to Lead the Way" with an image of people hiking to the top of a cliff below; a green banner reading "Trust God to Share Wisdom" with the image of a lightbulb below; a purple banner reading "Trust God to Give Us Peace" with a peace sign below.

Our Mission

During the week, Campers learned about how to care for God’s creatures. The main mission was to raise money for PAWs Animal Shelter, and we successfully raised over $900! To celebrate, the Campers got a special treat in the snack station. In the mission station, we learned about a variety of ways to take care of animals, including building good habitats, leaving no trace when we’re outside, and recycling!

Bible Story

In this station, campers joined Head Counselor Jenny to get a good understanding of each day’s Bible Story and lesson. They read the Bible together, talked about it, and did a trust exercise. This is also where they earned their badges, proving that they were learning what it means to trust God.

Art

Campers got to make a lot of exciting things in art this year, from painting rocks to weaving to friendship bracelets!

Snack

In the Mess Hall, the children got to gather around a campfire and sing some Camp Songs.

Games

Here at Camp Firelight, we value teamwork, good sportsmanship, and running around. The campers got to exercise all of these skills in Games.

Science

The Science Station is full of excitement. Campers got to do things like make gems, create lightning in a bottle, and even light stuff on fire! Well, the adults did it, of course. But it was very cool to watch.

We all -- the Campers and the volunteers -- has such a smooth and fun experience at VBS this week. We're so grateful for your support, whether you were a participant, a volunteer, or a supporting church member. And we can't wait to see you next year when we head out on a Road Trip, where explorers will learn what it means for God to be with us. Registration opens April 14. We can't wait to see you there!

My kids had such a good time this summer at VBS. The next week, my daughter went to a new camp and was feeling nervous. She told me she learned at camp that God goes with her and it helped her to find courage and comfort. Thanks for this time of fun and learning!
